In extra time, Cameroon defeated Brazil.
On the evening of December 2, Brazil’s final World Cup 2022 Group G match against Cameroon saw them lose 0-1 despite fielding a large number of reserves.
Brazil advanced to the round of 16 prior to the Cameroon game by defeating Serbia and Switzerland. Eder Militao and Fred were the only key players that coach Tite kept from the previous game. For the first time at the 2022 World Cup, goalkeeper Ederson, center back Bremer, right back Dani Alves, midfielder Everton Ribeiro, and striker Pedro are on the field.
Brazil however continued to control the match. They had 65% ball possession, launched 21 shots, including three Cameroons, and won 11 corners. Brazil came close to starting the scoring in the 14th minute. Gabriel Martinelli attempted to score but was stopped by Devis Epassy in the Cameroon goal.
To increase their chances of moving on, Cameroon must win this match and simultaneously hope Switzerland falls to Serbia in the other match. The African team, however, lacked the audacity to advance forcefully in front of Brazil’s strength. To counteract Brazil’s strength in the opening 32 minutes, they even had to receive three yellow cards.
Cameroon increased its ball contact after the break. With a shot off goal in the 54th minute, Vincent Aboubakar started a ruckus for Brazil.
The second half of the game devolved into a tug-of-war in the middle. Brazil is not particularly focused on attacking, while Cameroon struggles to keep possession of the ball.
In the second minute of injury time, it unexpectedly occurred as the game appeared to conclude in a tie. The entire Brazilian defense was dislodged by a cross from the right wing of Cameroon, allowing Aboubakar to head the ball into the far corner of the goal while goalkeeper Ederson stood motionless.
Aboubakar was given a second yellow card for taking off his shirt right after scoring. This is also the game’s final high point.
Cameroon gained four points from the victory but was unable to move on. Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2 to maintain second place with six points at the same time. Although it has six points as well, Brazil is in first place due to a higher goal difference (+2 vs. +1).
Brazil will compete against South Korea in the 1/8 round, and Switzerland will compete against Portugal.
